Verbal Reasoning - Number Ranking and Time Sequence Test
The position of a
object/person /thing etc., in a definite order, is called Rank
Position
of the person from upward=( Total number of persons – Position of the person from
down)+1.
Sudheer
ranks 7th from the down in a class of 30 students. What is his rank
from the first?
Answer:
There are 30 students in the class. And the rank of Sudheer is 7th from
the last.
∴ his rank from the top= (Number of students
– Rank from last) + 1
= (30-7)+1=24
Position
of a person from downward=( Total number of persons-Position of the person from
up)+1.
Example:
Sravani ranks 8th from the top in a class of 45 students. Find her
rank from the down?
Answer:
There are 45 students in the class and Sravani ranks 8th from the
top.
Her rank from the
last =(Total number of students – Rank from first)+1= (45-8)+1=38
Position
of the person from right =(Total number of persons –Position of the person from
left) +1 =
Example:
16 persons sit in a straight line. The position of Sharma is 9th
from the left. What is his position from the right?
Answer:
There are 16 persons
in the line and the position of Sharma is 9th from the left.
Sharma’s position
from the right = (Total members sit in the line – Sharma’s position from the
left)+1 =( 16-9)+1=8
Sharma is 8th
from the right.
Position
of a person from left = (Total number of persons – Position of the person from
right) +1
Example
: 24 girls are sitting in a line. The position of vasudha is 11th
from the right. What is her position from the left?
Answer
:
There are 24 girls in the line, and Vasudha is 11th from the right.
The position of
Vasudha from left=(Total girls in the line – Position of Vasudha from right)+1=
(24 -11)+1=14
So the position of
Vasudha from right is 14th.
If two
persons are on a definite position from top and bottom (or left and right or
top and down) and they interchange their ranks(places), then
i)
Total number of persons in
order=(Previous position of the first-person + Present position of the second person)-1
II) The present position of the first person or the present position of the second person= Difference of present and previous
positions of the 2nd person + previous position of 2nd
person= Difference of present and previous positions of first-person + previous
position of 2nd person
Example:
In a row of boys, Shiva is eighth from the left and Rajesh is nineteenth from
the right. If they interchange their positions, Shiva becomes fourteenth from
the left. Find the number of boys in the row?
Answer
:
Total number of girls =(Second position of Shiva + First position of Rajesh)-1
= (14+19)-1 = 32
In a
square of girls, Sameera is 6th from the left and Sravani is 8th
from the right. When they interchange their places among themselves, Sameera
becomes 18th from the left. Then, what will be Sravani’s present
position from the right?
Answer
:
Sravani’s position from the right = Difference of two positions of Sameera +
First position of Sravani.
=(18-6)+8=20
Sravani is in
position of 20th from the right
Solved
Problems:
1.
Sharma’s Position is 14th
from upwards in a class of 47 students. What will be his position from downwards?
Answer
:
Sharma’s Position
from downwards =(Total students – Sharma’s position from upwards)+1 = (47-14)+1
=34
So
Sharma will be in the 34th position from downwards.
2.
Kajal is on 29th
position from upwards and on 50th position from downwards in a
class. How many students are in the class?
Answer :
Total number of students in the class =( Kajal's position from upwards + Kajal’s position
from downwards )-1 = (29+50)-1= 78
So
there are 58 students in the class.
3.
Some men are sitting a
line. Mr. Tripathy is on 27th place from left, and Mr.Saxena is on 28th place from the right. There are 12 men in between them. How many men are there in
the line?
Answer :
Total
number of men = ( Mr. Tripathy’s place from left + Mr Saxena’s place from
right)+ ( Men between them) = (27+28)+12 =67.
There
are 67 men are sitting in the line.
4.
In a queue of students,
Krishna is 22nd from the left, and Rama is 15th from the
right. They interchange their positions. Now
Krishna is 30th from the right. What is the total number of
boys in the queue?
Answer :
Total number of students =( First position of Krishna + 2nd position
of Rama) -1 = (22+30)-1 =51
So
there are 51 students in the class.
5.
In a queue, Vishal is 18th from the
front and Ajith is 25TH from
the end, while Trisha is in between Vishal and Ajith. If Vishal be ahead of
Ajith and there are 60 persons in the queue, how many persons are there between
Vishal and Trisha?
Answer :
Number
of persons between Vishal and Ajith = Total persons –(Position of Vishal from
the front + Position of Ajith from the end) = 60-(18+25)=17.
Now,
Trisha lies in the middle of these 17 persons, i.e., at the 8th
position.
So
number of persons between Vishal and Trisha = =7
6.
Raman Shastri is on 23th
position from the front and on 18th position from the end in his
class. He is on 18th position from the top and on 8th
position from the end among students who passed in the examination. How many
students failed in the examination?
Answer :
Total
students =( Shastri’s place from starting + Shastris place from the end)-1
=(33+18)-1=41-1=40.
Total
passed students = (Shastri’s position from the top + Shastri’s position from
the end)-1= (18+13)-1=30
∴, number of failed students
=( Total students – Number of students passed)
=(40-30)=10
7.
In a row of students,
Bhavya is seventeenth from the left, and Mohana is ninth from the right. When
Bhavya and Mohana exchange their positions, Bhavya will be 32nd person
from the left. Which will be Mohana’s position from the right?
Answer: After exchanging positions, Bhavya becomes
fifteenth instead of the seventh from the left., it means there are 7 students
between them. So Mohana’s position from the right = (Difference of two
positions of Bhavya + First position of Mohana) ( 32-17)+9 = 24.
∴, Mohana’s position from the
right = 24
8.
In a row of students, P is
18th from the left end and R is 20th from the right
end.Q, who is 4th to the right of P, is 5th to the left
of R in the row. Find how many students are there in the row?
Answer :
Given that, P is 18th from
the left, then there are 17 students to the left P. R is 20th from
the right, then there are 19 students to the right of R. Also Q lies between P
and Q such that 3 students between P and
Q, and 4 students between Q and R.
So number of boys in
the row = (15+1+3+1+4+1+19)=44
9.
In a class of 120, where
girls are four times that of boys, Raju ranked 34th from the top. If there are 18 girls ahead of
Raju, how many boys are after him in rank?
Answer : Let
the number of boys is x.
Then
number of girls =4x
Total
students = (x+4x) =120 =>x=24.
So the number of boys = 24. Then the number of
girls= 96
Number of students behind Raju in rank
=(120-34)=86.
Number
of girls ahead of Ravi in rank = (96-18)=78
∴, number of boys behind Ravi
in rank =(86-78)=8
10. In a row of boys, Ravi occupies the 10th place from the right end and
Srinivas occupies 11th place from the left end. If they interchange
their places, then Ravi occupies 8th place from the right and
Srinivas occupies 18th place from the left end. How many boys are
there in the row?
Answer
: Since Ravi and Srinivas exchange
places, so Ravi’s new place is same as Srinivas’s earlier position. His position is 18th from the
right end, and he is in the11th position from the left end.
∴ the number of boys in the row =(17+1+10) =28
