OMISSION OF THE ARTICLE

The article is not used.

1)   Before material nouns used in a general sense.
Ex: Gold is a precious metal.

2)   Before abstract nouns used in a general sense.
Ex: Truth always wins

3)   Before proper nouns.
Ex: Sarojini Naidu wrote verses in English

4)   Before common nouns in the singular number used in their widest sense.
Ex: Man is mortal.

5)   Before names of relations like father, mother, aunt, uncle and also cook and nurse.
Ex: Father is angry, Mother is kind.

6)   Before school, College, Church, Bed, Table, Hospital, Market, Prison when these places are visited or used for their primary purpose.
Ex: I learned English at school.
Note: The is used with these words when we refer to them as a definite place, building or object rather than to the normal activity that goes on there.
Ex: I met him at school.

7)   Before home when it means the home of the speaker or the person spoke to.
Ex: stay at home.

8)   Before concrete nouns like Heaven, Hell, Paradise, Parliament, Congress
Ex: The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.

9)   Before languages.
Ex: she is studying Sanskrit

10)        Before names of seasons.
Ex: Winter is the best time for reading.

11)        Before the names of meals, unless specially qualified.
Ex: Breakfast is ready.

12)        Before the names of Science etc. When they are used in general sense.
Ex: Physics is a very interesting subject.

13)        In Certain verbal Phrase.
To catch fire, to leave school, to set foot, to send word, to leave home, to take a breath, to give battle, to last horse

14)        After type of, kind of, sort of, post of, title of, rank of, articles are not used.
Ex: She is not that sort of girl

15)        Before Superlative adjectives and adverbs used predictively.
Ex:  She known best.

16)        Before a noun proceeded by a possessive adjective.
Ex: My car, My Bike.

17)        Before a few nouns denoting time, especially in connection with school life: term, break, prayers, hall, and preparation. The same applies today, night, morning, evening, dawn, twilight, dusk, when used in an abstract or general sense, in some prepositional adjusts.
Ex: we always got up at dawn.

18)        Before nouns like day, the names of the days of the week, night, week, month, year, proceeded by next or last, except sometimes when starting from a point of time in the past or future.
Ex: I propose to meet him next Sunday.
But the next day she was still feeling week and giddy.

19)        Before common nouns used in pairs.
Ex: Both husband and wife are supposed to take part in this election.

20)        In expressing a comparison,  if two nouns refer to the same person or thing, the article ‘a’ is used before the first noun only.
Ex: she is a better lecturer than administrator.

21)        In certain prepositional phrases: In hand, at home, in bed, in debt, at school, by day, by night, at sunrise, at sunset, at night, at interest, on earth, in heaven, by land, by sea, by train, by boat, by name, on horseback, on foot, at dinner, at table, in love, in court, for money, articles are not used.
